Zelensky asked to consider the issue of registering same-sex marriages in Ukraine

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky asked the government to consider introducing the institution of a registered civil partnership in the country, in response to a petition posted on the website of the head of state.

“I turned to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine with a proposal to work out the issue of introducing the institution of a registered civil partnership,” the statement says.

It is specified that the head of state considered the relevant petition in the summer of 2022, focusing on the country’s constitution, which states, in accordance with Art. 51 that marriage is based on the voluntary consent of a man and a woman. In addition, he added that during the martial law in the country, it is impossible to change the provisions of the constitution.

The petition arrived on the website of the Ukrainian president at the end of April and gained the 25,000 votes necessary for consideration.
