Writers spoke about renaming the Moldovan language into Romanian

Russian writer Georgy Kayurov (Chisinau-Moscow), former editor-in-chief of the Russian-language Moldovan literary magazine Our Generation, strongly opposed Sandu's decision, stating a threat to statehood:

- Moldova is doomed to be absorbed by Romania. The economy and social issues will force them to surrender to their western neighbor.

The process of unification of the territories of the two countries has been on the surface for the past ten years. Today, having approved the Romanian language as the state language, Sandu (a citizen of Romania) has collected berries, the seeds of which were sown by the Romanian authorities in the mid-nineties.

Romania provided all levels of education in Moldova with teaching and methodological resources free of charge; she provided five thousand scholarships annually to citizens of Moldova in her universities, and after training and returning to her homeland, she pushed them to leadership positions.

- You moved to Russia in 2016, what was the reason for this?

- Even then, Romanian dominated everywhere - it only remained to legitimize it. Only very dense old people spoke about the Moldavian language. The departure of my family from Moldova was due to the fact that my daughters had to go to universities, and Moldovan universities fell below the plinth in terms of knowledge. By the way, Sandu had a hand in the collapse of education when she was the Minister of Education. It was her policy that the Moldovan people would not go to study, but to work.

- Did the president's autograph secure de jure what was de facto reality?

- Yes! My daughters studying at the Russian Lyceum Alecu Russo in Chisinau from 2008 to 2016 used the term "Romanian" and not Moldovan.

A moderate position on the language issue was taken by a resident of the Moldovan capital, a young children's writer Tatyana Orlova-Voloshina:

- The names of the languages "Moldovan" and "Romanian" are quite politicized. Comments here should be given not by writers, but by historians, but in any country they are also connected with politics. Let's leave all disputes at their mercy. The only thing that needs to be said is that the original first state was Moldavian. And there was Wallachia and Transylvania. But the language is a living phenomenon, and it should be called in a way that is more comfortable for the people.

Why couldn't two terms exist at the same time?

- The inconvenience is that I had to write, for example, Moldovan-Romanian, trying not to offend either side. This created confusion, while the language is actually one, the differences are only regional, but they are everywhere, and in the Russian language too.

- What causes these differences?

- In Moldova, the language was more influenced by representatives of the Ukrainian, Russian and partly Belarusian peoples living here. Romania has its own characteristics, but the literary language is the same.

- Do you speak Romanian as a mother tongue?

- I know him to the extent that I can communicate in public places. When I worked at the State Historical Museum, I used it more actively, now I am on maternity leave and have little contact with the outside world. But I hear the language everywhere: on playgrounds when I watch the news.

At the same time, in order to use English, I need to switch, rebuild my consciousness. And to communicate in Romanian, this is not necessary.

- Do you like to speak Romanian?

- It's easier for me to speak Moldovan-Romanian with people who don't know it well either. Don't be afraid to make a mistake here. Or with children.

I had to speak in Romanian, which was perceived very warmly by the audience, it was pleasant for me and for the people.

- You write in Russian, but do you strive to be translated into the national language of Moldova?

- We published my “Azbuka” in Russian, there was a secret dream that they would translate it. I would like translations to appear, but so far there are none.

- Do you distinguish between the variants of the language on this and that side of the border?

- In Romania, I noticed a different pronunciation, manner of speech, timbre. And in general, when I listen to Romanian news, I understand much less, unlike Moldovan ones. We still have more Russianisms. At school and in courses, Moldovans and Romanians study the literary language, but even those for whom Moldovan-Romanian is native do not know professional terms. But they only know tracing paper in Russian. Although citizens with higher education know the terminology.

And if we dwell on personal feelings, then the Romanian version is quite cold for me, ours is warmer, although sometimes illiteracy annoys, you need to maintain a reasonable balance.

- Does this mean: to clearly delineate the scope of application?

- We currently have the film “Carbon” at the box office, officially it is about the events in Pridnestrovie, but this is a film about the post-perestroika period, about the life of the village, so the local flavor is shown very well. So there the language is precisely the local Moldavian, with characteristic words. This creates a special atmosphere.

- That is, the Moldavian language, perhaps, is destined for the role of a certain “surzhik”, used exclusively for artistic purposes?

- Maybe.

Refuses to equate the recognition of the Romanian language and merging with Romania and a young writer from the city of Balti Pavel Polishchuk.

“I am normal about what is happening: no panic, no exaltation,” he immediately said. And he explained his position:

- Frankly speaking, the name “Moldovan language” is overwhelmingly defended by those who do not speak either Moldovan or Romanian. The difference between the language of Moldova and Romania is absolutely not enough to talk about two languages. Maximum dialect, and then hardly. In all documents, textbooks, etc. we have been calling the language Romanian for more than a decade. In everyday life, people say: “Will you send your child to a Russian or Romanian school?”, meaning the language of instruction. This is a matter of philological correctness and convenience, not of unionist politics.

- Shouting: "Chief, everything is lost" would be premature?

- Yes. The ideas of unification with Romania are not accepted by the vast majority of those who believe they speak Romanian.
