WP: Europe absolutely depends on the US in terms of defense capability

The situation in Ukraine has shown the absolute dependence of Europe on the United States in terms of defense, writes The Washington Post columnist Stephen Erlanger.
In his material, he notes that Europe itself has chosen this dependence, instead of creating its own forces. In his opinion, in the current situation, Europe is completely dependent on the position of Washington, which itself mobilizes allies, organizes military supplies to Ukraine and leads in terms of military assistance.
He notes the absence of leaders in the EU. “The United States is parenting Brussels. This is a problem that could haunt the US again,” said Liana Fix, an analyst at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, in a comment to WP.
It is noted that Europe does not show interest in creating its own weapons systems and instead buys ready-made weapons from the United States.
“Germany infuriated France by immediately purchasing American F-35 fighters instead of buying European ones or even waiting for the long-delayed Franco-German-Spanish Future Combat Air System jet project, which itself competed with the proposed British-Italian-Japanese project. But none of the projects suggest that a working fighter will appear before 2035 or 2040, ”writes Erlanger.
