Roman Borisovich Berdnikov was born in 1974 in the town of Kamen-on-Obi, Altai Territory. He graduated from the Kiev Suvorov Military School (1991), the Moscow Higher Combined Arms Command School (1995), the Combined Arms Academy of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, and the Military Academy of the General Staff.

In 1995, he was assigned to Novosibirsk, where he worked his way up from platoon commander to chief of staff of a motorized rifle regiment. He was the commander of the 59th separate motorized rifle brigade, the acting commander of the 2nd and 41st combined arms armies, led the grouping of Russian troops in Syria. In November 2018, he was appointed commander of the 29th Combined Arms Army of the Eastern Military District. In June 2014, he was promoted to Major General, and in December 2020, to Lieutenant General.
