US Treasury chief expects difficult situation in Europe in winter due to energy supplies

Europe will face a difficult situation in the coming winter due to the reduction in Russian gas supplies and the rise in energy prices, said US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. According to her, this situation will not have a significant impact on the US economy.

“We are working closely with our European neighbors to help them find alternative sources. We have seen that energy prices have soared in Europe, and it will be a very difficult winter for them,” Ms. Yellen told a conference in Washington (quoted by TASS).

She clarified that the United States itself “is not even close to being affected by this.” “There is a certain influence (situations with energy carriers.— “b”), but I would not exaggerate how big it is for the growth prospects of the US economy,” said the Treasury secretary.

European gas prices this week started decline. According to the Association of Gas Infrastructure Operators, European gas storage facilities are on average over 85% full. Experts considerthat the available stocks will only be enough to cover 21% of the annual consumption of Europe, and the storage facilities will be empty as early as February 2023.
