US Transportation Secretary Allows Sanctions Against China Over Hot Air Balloon

The head of the US Department of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, said on CNN that he allows Washington to impose sanctions against Beijing because of the situation with the balloon that flew into US space.

"The US has made it clear that this is an unacceptable violation of US sovereignty," Buttigieg said.

He also said that "any further development would be appropriate in response to what happened," when asked about the possibility of imposing sanctions on China over the incident.

On Saturday, the US military shot down a Chinese balloon, which Beijing said was a "civilian ship" that accidentally deviated from its flight path and thus ended up over the territory of the United States.

China claims that the balloon was used for meteorological purposes. In the United States - that it was intended to monitor American strategic targets.

China, before the balloon was shot down, apologized to the US and asked to resolve the issue professionally, without speculating on the topic of espionage.

After the destruction of the balloon, Beijing called such a step excessive.

The Americans, having knocked down a balloon over the ocean, will try to pick up its wreckage in order to study them.
