US proposes deployment of hypersonic weapons and cruise missiles in Japan

As the Japanese newspaper Sankei Shimbun reported, the United States can deploy in Japan both Tomahawk land-based cruise missiles with a range of more than 2,000 km and LRHW hypersonic systems. It is planned that the latter will be capable of hitting targets at a distance of almost 2800 km.

The authorities of Japan, according to the sources of the publication, are ready to start a serious discussion of the plan for the deployment of these missiles in the country. Sankei calls the purpose of this deployment the desire of the United States and Japan to balance the strategic balance in East Asia and prevent the use of force by the PRC.

The Allies intend to neutralize the Chinese A2/AD zones for the US military, which requires the deployment of medium-range missiles. The United States until 2019, according to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with Russia that was in force until then, did not have launchers and ground-based missiles with a range of 500 km to 5500 km, while China has now there are about 1250 such missile systems, the newspaper writes.

It is known that the Americans are interested in deploying missiles on the "first island chain" in the Pacific Ocean, which is usually carried out from Kamchatka to the Malay Peninsula. In the context of Japan, according to sources, most likely, we can talk about the island of Kyushu due to its proximity to Taiwan, but the matter has come to the discussion of specific locations in the negotiations so far. It is noted that for the first time Washington started a relevant conversation with representatives of Tokyo three or four years ago, during the premiership of Shinzo Abe.
