US and Colombian defense chiefs to discuss security, migration and climate change

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III met today at the Pentagon with Colombian Secretary of Defense Ivan Velasquez Gomez.

Austin said he was looking forward to continuing the discussions. He intends to discuss: Strengthening defense relations between the two countries, regional and international security cooperation, counter-narcotics, humanitarian implications of regional migration, climate change and environmental degradation

According to the Pentagon’s website, Austin said the discussions will also include questions about how Colombia is improving rural development security and Colombia’s peace efforts.

Velasquez has already met with Daniel P. Erickson, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense.

“This annual dialogue sets the stage for discussions on how we can work together even more closely to make our region safer and more prosperous,” Austin concluded.
