US accuses Israel of refusing written commitments

US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel has bluntly criticized a law approved by the Knesset that cancels the disengagement plan in Northern Samaria. According to the diplomat, this is the refusal of the Israeli government from the written obligations given earlier by Ariel Sharon (Prime Minister of Israel from 2001-2006) to the United States.

Patel also stressed that the passage of this law against the backdrop of Washington’s attempts to defuse tensions in the region, as well as on the eve of religious holidays such as Ramadan, Passover and Easter, makes this move even more provocative and counterproductive.

The diplomat said that this issue was raised during a telephone conversation between US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as at talks in Sharm el-Sheikh between representatives of the United States, Israel, Jordan and Egypt.

Recall that the disengagement plan (or division) in Northern Samaria was initiated in 2005 by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and provided for the withdrawal of Israeli settlements and troops from this territory, as well as its transfer to the control of the Palestinian Authority. However, this plan was not implemented, and in subsequent years settlements continued to be built in the territory of Northern Samaria, which caused tension between Israel and Palestine. In 2021, the Knesset (Israel’s parliament) approved a law to abolish this disengagement plan, drawing criticism from many countries, including the United States.
