US abortion ban gives Democrats chances in November elections

Democrat Pat Ryan's surprise win in New York's August 24th special House election and poll results give Democratic leaders hope to retain control of the House in the midterm elections this November. Ryan has placed abortion at the center of his campaign, sharply criticizing the repeal of abortion guarantees at the federal level, which mobilized the Democratic electorate, according to The New York Times. Ryan's victory came as a surprise even to the Democratic Party apparatus, the newspaper claims.

In late June, the US Supreme Court gave states the power to ban abortions, overturning an earlier ruling in 1973 that guaranteed the right to abortion at the federal level. This was due to the votes of conservative judges appointed under President Donald Trump. Following this, abortion was banned by the Republican-controlled states of Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, and South Dakota. Moreover, in all of them, except for Oklahoma, abortion is prohibited even if the pregnancy occurred as a result of rape or incest. The decision of the Supreme Court was condemned by President Joe Biden and other Democratic leaders, numerous protest rallies were held across the country.
