UNESCO concerned about the threat of destruction of the citadel of Aleppo

UNESCO is concerned about the position of the historic citadel of Aleppo in Syria, which was damaged by the earthquake, RIA Novosti reports.

UNESCO spokesperson Thomas Mallar said an initial assessment of the damage to the UNESCO heritage had been carried out. The organization is "particularly concerned about the situation of the ancient city of Aleppo, which is on the List of World Heritage in Danger."

According to him, there was "significant damage" in the citadel. Mallar said that in the old part of the city, the western tower collapsed, and several buildings were damaged and weakened structures.

The 7.4 magnitude earthquake on Monday morning damaged the historic fortress of Gaziantep in Turkey and the citadel of Aleppo in Syria, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
