Ukrainian boxer Usyk called his detention a misunderstanding
Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk reported on Instagram (activities are banned in Russia) that he was released after being detained at the Krakow airport, Poland. The athlete explained that there was a mistake that was quickly resolved.
"Friends, everything is fine. Thank you to everyone who was worried. I thank the Ukrainian diplomats for their support and the Polish law enforcement officers for their work, despite my height, weight and titles," the boxer wrote.
Verkhovna Rada deputy Zhan Beleniuk confirmed the information about Usyk's detention, but did not provide any details. The Elitexpert publication found out that law enforcement officers paid attention to Usyk because of speeding: the boxer was rushing to catch a flight and was "flying" in a luxury car, significantly exceeding the speed limit. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has already spoken with Usyk and expressed dissatisfaction with such treatment of a Ukrainian citizen.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry intends to lodge a protest with Poland over Usyk's detention and treatment. Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgy Tykhy noted that the agency wants to demonstrate its indignation over the incident.
