The Ukrainian authorities have appealed to the UN with a demand to hold an emergency meeting of the Security Council in connection with the holding of referendums, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko wrote on Twitter.

Referendums on secession from Ukraine and joining the Russian Federation are held in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as in the territories of Zaporozhye and Kherson regions not controlled by Kyiv. Voting will continue for five days, until September 27th.

Reporting on Ukraine’s demand, Nikolenko called the referenda “fictitious” and called for Russia to be held accountable for violating the UN Charter. He also accused Moscow of trying to change “the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine.”

Earlier it was reported that the initiative to discuss this issue in the UN Security Council was made by the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Serhiy Kyslytsya. He sent a corresponding request to Nicolas de Riviere, the Permanent Representative of France, which chairs the Security Council in September. Among other requests from Kyiv to the UN is to provide information on the situation in the above territories.

The meeting is scheduled for September 27 at 22:00 (Moscow time).
