The West is waiting for negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, but is in no hurry to start them

The visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Washington showed that Western countries are waiting for the start of the negotiation process between Moscow and Kyiv in order to end the conflict, but the US and the EU are in no hurry to start this process.

According to Kommersant, all of Kyiv's allies have declared their readiness to continue to provide support for as long as necessary. But some of them, including Paris, believe that it is necessary to be ready to start negotiations at any moment and the sooner they begin, the better.

In the opinion of French President Macron, it is necessary to maintain contacts with Russian President Vladimir Putin. At the same time, American leader Joe Biden believes that certain conditions are necessary for this cooperation. The ambiguity between these positions can be explained by Macron's remark that allies are paying far different prices for the ongoing conflict.

Macron's statement evoked responses in many European countries. Thus, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban supported Macron, stressing that the time had come to rethink the sanctions.

In turn, the Kremlin again stated that they do not see any shifts in the policy of the European Union towards a diplomatic settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.
