The United States will seek Turkey to reduce the use of the Mir payment system

US Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Elizabeth Rosenberg said the country will work with Turkey to restrict Russia’s Mir payment system outside of Russia. The ministry believes that Turkey is helping the Russians to ignore the sanctions.
According to Elizabeth Rosenberg, the Ministry of Finance is concerned that Russia has the ability to circumvent the sanctions imposed against the backdrop of a special operation in Ukraine. Tourists outside of Russia can pay with cards of the Russian national payment system “Mir”.
According to her, the US and Turkey will work to fix the problem. “We will continue to engage with Turkey focusing on this vulnerability,” Ms. Rosenberg said at a hearing in the US Senate (quoted from “Prime”). She also added that “the Deputy Minister has made specific significant efforts in this regard.”
Yesterday, September 19, two large Turkish banks – Is Bankasi and DenizBank – stopped transactions with Mir cards. This happened after the US promised to impose secondary sanctions on foreign financial institutions. Against this background, the Russian Embassy in Turkey recommended use the terminals of those banks that have not refused to accept Russian cards, and have also been advised to carry enough cash with them.
Earlier it became known that against the head of the National Payment Card System (NSPK) Vladimir Komlev introduced US Department of the Treasury sanctions, however, neither the NSPK itself nor the Mir payment system are on the SDN list yet. At the same time, the US Treasury Department noted that those cooperating with the organization “risk supporting Russia’s efforts to circumvent US sanctions” by using Russia’s national payment system abroad.
