The terms for the transfer of M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine have been announced: they will upset Zelensky

Alteration of equipment will take America from six months to a year

Despite the agreement of US President Joe Biden to send 31 tanks to Ukraine, it will be a long time before American military equipment ends up in the hands of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This was reported by Forbes magazine on January 28.

According to the publication, the problem lies in the “uranium stuffing”: the armor of the M1 “Abrams” is partly made up of a by-product of nuclear power plants – depleted uranium. Unfortunately for Ukraine, the US Department of Energy prohibits the export of depleted uranium to other countries in any form.

An American magazine reported that before sending the M1 Abrams to Ukraine, the uranium armor of the tanks would be replaced with tungsten. There is a high probability that the M1 Abrams supplied to Ukraine will be much more vulnerable to the enemy than tanks with uranium armor.

“Tungsten is a strong metal, but it is also very brittle. With a strong blow, it simply breaks. When the US Department of Defense tested tungsten armor in 1960, the researchers were disappointed with the results and declared tungsten unsuitable as a protective coating for military equipment.

The US decision on the Abrams will certainly upset President Zelensky. The day before, he said that tanks are needed today, and in August it will be too late.
