The Southern Federal Sports Training Center “Yug-Sport” of the Ministry of Sports of Russia in Sochi became the venue for the opening ceremony of the Summer Paralympic Games “We are together. Sport”.

Before the start of the event, state awards were presented to the Paralympic coaches. In particular, they were awarded to Olga Baidalova (swimming), Sergei Grammatikopolo (swimming), Tatyana Novikova (swimming), Valery Purtov (fencing), Natalya Stepanova (swimming), Mikhail Uranov (swimming), Nikolai Khalukhaev (athletics).

More than 850 Paralympic athletes from Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Turkmenistan and other countries are involved in these competitions. Until October 9, inclusive, they will compete for 436 sets of medals in sports such as athletics, table tennis, para-taekwondo, swimming, archery, wheelchair fencing, cerebral palsy football, checkers and chess. However, the competitions started even before the official ceremony, and fencer Nikita Nagaev from the Republic of Bashkortostan became the first champion of the Summer Paralympic Games.
