A gas leak at Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 could threaten to shift the ecological balance and kill underwater life in a significant part of the water area. This was stated by an employee of the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, candidate of biological sciences Philip Sapozhnikov.

The scientist noted that the gas comes out of the damaged gas pipelines in the form of large bubbles and dissipates due to their collision with each other. When rising to the surface, diffusion into the water column occurs. As a result, such a highly concentrated stuffing poisons the water area.

“Diffusion of natural gas into sea water in a significant part of the water area will lead to the mass development of bacteria capable of using it physiologically. This will lead to an overall massive shift in the ecological balance,” he said.

Sapozhnikov believes that fish and plankton may die in a large adjacent area.

Recall leaks in gas pipelines were found in Swedish and Danish waters near the island of Bornholm. Navigation in these areas had to be restricted. The Danish authorities have not ruled out that this is the result of sabotage.
