The Russian Foreign Ministry appreciated the plans of Finland and Estonia to close the Gulf of Finland

Russian Foreign Ministry: implementing a blockade of the Gulf of Finland would be a violation of maritime law

If Finland and Estonia intend to block the Gulf of Finland to Russian ships, Russia will consider this a violation of international maritime law, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

In conversation with RIA Novosti diplomats noted that maritime law does not contain provisions allowing anyone to restrict the movement of ships in the region, especially if we are talking about unilateral measures aimed at a specific state.

The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that they do not quite understand what kind of threats Finland and Estonia mean.

Previously reportedthat Helsinki and Tallinn are developing an action plan in case the waters of the Gulf of Finland have to be closed due to a “threat from Russia.”
