Representatives of the Russian embassy in Washington expressed the hope that the statements that appeared earlier in the media about plans allegedly being developed in the United States to strike at the military-political leadership of Russia are nonsense, and not the real position of the Pentagon.
It is specified that the attention of diplomats was attracted by the material posted in the Newsweek edition. In it, citing Pentagon officials who wished to remain anonymous, it was argued that the United States could respond to the hypothetical use of nuclear weapons by Russia with various actions. Among the “crazy options” under consideration is a decapitating blow “to the heart of the Kremlin.”
“We would like to believe that such statements do not reflect the official position of the American military department,” the embassy noted.
The diplomats added that representatives of the US Department of Defense should in no case doubt the determination of the Russian Federation to defend its state sovereignty, people and territorial integrity by all available means.
