Shelling from the Ukrainian side remains the main threat to the security of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. In this regard, Russia supports the idea of creating a protection zone around the station, but such an initiative should not result in a decrease in the security level of the facility. This statement was made by the representative of the Russian Federation Natalya Karmazinskaya during her speech at a meeting of the UN General Assembly.

Karmazinskaya explained that the attacks of the Ukrainian military on the Zaporizhzhya NPP create “a threat to the safety of the station and the risks of a man-made accident with radiation emissions.” She pointed to the shelling on November 19 and 20, information about which the Russian side conveyed to the Security Council and the UN General Assembly.

“However, the United States and its allies continue to ignore what is happening and are in no hurry to reason with the regime. [президента Украины Владимира] Zelensky, who actually plays with the lives of not only his country, but the entire European continent, ”said Karmazinskaya (quote according to TASS).

She also recalled the proposal of the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, to create a protection zone around the ZNPP. Russia supports this initiative, the representative of the Russian Federation clarified, but on the condition that this measure will not lead to “a decrease in the degree of security [станции] and the increased threat of terrorist acts”.

Russia has controlled the ZNPP since the end of February. After the Zaporozhye region became part of Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed to take the plant facilities into federal ownership and create the Zaporozhye NPP Federal State Unitary Enterprise to ensure the safety of nuclear facilities.

At the same time, the Ukrainian side does not stop trying to attack the ZNPP. The shelling resumed on 19 and 20 November. The Ukrainian military resumed shelling of the ZNPP on November 19 and 20. Grossi urged “immediately stop” the shelling of the station and stepped up contacts with the Russian and Ukrainian sides to agree on the creation of a safe zone around the ZNPP. The head of the IAEA admitted that it would be possible to come to such a decision before the end of 2022.

Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov declaredthat Moscow is also concerned about the situation around the ZNPP. He called on all countries of the world to influence Kyiv so that the Ukrainian military would stop shelling the station.
