The Portuguese Rui Almeida is the new coach of Niort

The Red Star has its new coach, the Portuguese Rui Almeida, who has already passed through the French benches of Red Star, Bastia, Troyes and Caen.

Almeida, 52, has signed up for one season with an optional second and replaces Sébastien Desabre, who left the Deux-Sévrien club on August 7 after two days to become coach of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Lisbon, assistant for many years mainly in Portugal (Estoril, Sporting, Braga) as well as Panathinaikos (Greek D1), started as number 1 coach at Red Star in July 2015 (59 matches).

He then trained Bastia for four months in 2017, then officiated in Troyes (2018-2019) where he failed in the play-off for the rise in L1 against Lens, before a last short failed experience in Caen (6 points taken in 9 days ). Almeida has not coached since November 2020, when he was dismissed by Gil Vicente (Portuguese D1).
