The population of the Russian Federation decreased by half a million people

The resident population of Russia as of January 1, 2023 amounted to 146.4 million people, follows from Rosstat data. In comparison with the figures as of January 1, 2022 (146.9 million), the number of inhabitants in the Russian Federation over the past year decreased by 555 thousand people.
As specified in the press service of Rosstat, the presented estimate takes into account the results of the last population census, which took place in 2021. Its figures have been adjusted for 2023, taking into account the number of births and deaths, as well as migration flows. Recall that according to the results of the census, the number of inhabitants of the Russian Federation was then recalculated upwards – the excess amounted to more than 1 million people.
Rosstat clarified that the population estimate presented now does not take into account residents of the four regions admitted to Russia in September 2022 (DNR, LNR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions). As follows from the draft law submitted to the State Duma last week, which regulates the procedure for paying sick leave, maternity benefits, and also based on previous statements by the Ministry of Labor, after the residents of the annexed territories are taken into account in the statistics of Rosstat, the population of the Russian Federation may grow by more than 2 million people. It should be noted, however, that the effect of population growth due to the annexation of territories will apparently be exhausted in a few years – similarly, this happened in 2015-2021, when the number of residents of the Russian Federation, which increased after the annexation of Crimea, stabilized at the level of 146.3-146.1 million people.
It is still difficult to accurately assess what influenced the decline in the indicator in 2022 – Rosstat has published data on population movements for only 11 months. But even from these data it is clear that the number of births last year decreased by 6.8% – to 1.2 million people. The number of deaths during the same period was half a million more and amounted to 1.7 million people. However, this indicator decreased compared to 2021 even more significantly than the birth rate, by 21.9%. The natural population loss of 500 thousand people, which Rosstat recorded at the end of 2022, thus turned out to be significantly lower than it was in 2021 – then the population loss amounted to 945 thousand people.
