The National Commission on Ethics in the Field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) sent a letter to Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov with a request to regulate the use of neural networks in the learning process. The AI Ethics Commission appeared in Russia in 2022. Andrey Neznamov, Managing Director of Sberbank’s AI Regulatory Center and Head of the AI Alliance’s Regulatory Working Group, chairs it. The commission includes Alexander Krainov, Director for Development of AI Technologies at Yandex, Elena Suragina, Head of the Regulatory Support Group at MTS, Alexander Tormasov, Rector of Innopolis University, Vice President for Planning and Development of the Skolkovo Foundation, and others.
“Everyone is now discussing high-profile cases in education, but technology will continue to develop. We see the best solution in adapting the education sector to their use,” Andrey Neznamov said.
The authors of the letter note that often the text written by the neural network cannot be distinguished from the usual one. At the same time, members of the commission believe that artificial intelligence can be useful for performing a number of tasks, for example, the layout of materials and text formatting. In this case, the use of AI by students can save time.
“The use of such technologies may be appropriate and useful for mastering certain specialties and skills, and in some cases will not contradict the obligation of students to do the work on their own,” the letter from the Ministry of Education and Science says.
ChatGPT itself also believes that neural networks are an effective mechanism that will help students and simplify many tasks.
“They can be used to analyze large amounts of data, as well as to generate complex models and image recognition,” the chatbot said in response to a question from Vedomosti. He added that AI should not be used in activities that require human thinking, such as art evaluation, learning and decision-making.
Last week, a fifth-year student of the Russian State Humanitarian University, Alexander Zhadan, wrote his thesis on the topic “Analysis and improvement of the management of a gaming organization” using ChatGPT and received “satisfactory” for it. He said that he gave the chat-bot commands in English to create parts of the diploma according to a prepared plan, after which he edited them himself. It took the student less than a day to complete the work. The leadership of the Russian State University for the Humanities promised to re-analyze Mr. Zhadan’s diploma and called for restricting access to the chatbot for educational purposes.
