The Ministry of Labor proposed to index the minimum wage by almost 17%

The Ministry of Labor of Russia proposed to increase the living wage for 2023 to 14,375 rubles, and the minimum wage (minimum wage) to 16,242 rubles. According to the Minister of Labor and Social Protection of the Russian Federation Anton Kotyakov, the total annual growth of the subsistence minimum will be 13.6%, and the minimum wage – 16.9%. He noted that the draft laws on indexation were supported at a government meeting, they will be submitted to the State Duma as part of the budget package.

“Traditionally, the indexation of the subsistence minimum and the minimum wage is carried out from January 1. In the conditions of high inflation in 2022, it was decided to raise the subsistence minimum and the minimum wage in stages in order to support the incomes of citizens, taking into account rising prices. Since June 1, the living wage, the minimum wage, insurance and social pensions, on behalf of the president, have been indexed by 10%. From January 1, it is proposed to increase the cost of living by another 3.3%, and the minimum wage – by 6.3%,” said Mr. Kotyakov (quoted from press service Ministry of Labor).

The Ministry of Labor noted that raising the subsistence level will increase monthly payments for 15 million Russians. The Minister added that the minimum wage will grow at a faster rate than the cost of living. The value set on June 1, 2022 will be additionally indexed from January 1, 2023 by 6.3%.

The press service of the department explained that in 2023 and 2024, the subsistence minimum and the minimum wage are proposed to be established in a special manner by the law on the federal budget, taking into account the projected level of inflation.

As of January 1, the subsistence minimum per capita was 12,654 rubles, for the able-bodied population – 13,793 rubles, for pensioners – 10,882 rubles, for children – 12,274 rubles. On June 1, the subsistence minimum was increased by 10%. This indexed living wage will be increased by 3.3% from January 1, 2023.
