The Ministry of Industry and Trade proposed to introduce state regulation of methanol after cases of fatal poisoning

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has developed a draft law on the introduction of state regulation of the production and circulation of methyl alcohol. If adopted, the law will limit the list of participants in the methanol production market, excluding its uncontrolled turnover.

“The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia has developed a draft federal law, according to which it is planned to introduce state regulation of the production and circulation of methyl alcohol (methanol) in Russia,” the press service of the ministry reports. The document provides for the introduction of new mandatory requirements for the turnover of methanol.

Earlier, in the regions of the Volga Federal District, more than 20 people died as a result of poisoning with the draft drink “Mr. Cider”, about 70 were injured. Experts of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Ulyanovsk region discovered methanol and ethyl butyrate impurities in the drink in proportions that pose a threat to the life and health of consumers.

In connection with the incident in the Ulyanovsk region detained entrepreneur Anar Huseynov. A criminal case was initiated under Part 3 of Art. 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (provision of services that do not meet safety requirements, resulting in the death of two or more persons through negligence, up to ten years in prison).
