Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Yevgeny Ivanov said that the study of foreign languages, including Ukrainian, would not be prohibited in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. On September 30, Vladimir Putin signed an agreement to include these four regions in Russia.
Mr. Ivanov said that new regions will determine the study of certain languages on their own. “It is written in the contracts that the state language is Russian. It will not be forbidden to study (Ukrainian.— “b”),” he told reporters (TASS quote).
In the Zaporozhye region spokethat the Ukrainian language may remain in official status, as in Crimea. State Duma accepted laws on the entry of new territories into Russia yesterday, October 3. Today they should be considered by the Federation Council.
