The Ministry of Agriculture abandoned the goal of consuming at least 25 kg of fish per person per year

The Ministry of Agriculture removed from the goals of the state program "Development of the fishery complex" the achievement of consumption of fish products in the amount of at least 25 kg per person per year. This is stated in draft resolutionpublished on the portal of legal acts.

Initially, it was assumed that it was necessary to achieve “an average per capita consumption of fish products in the households of the Russian Federation in the amount of at least 25 kg per year in live weight and maintain a level of self-sufficiency in fish and fish products of at least 85% per year.” As a result, it was decided to remove the first part, which said about 25 kg of fish per person, the explanatory note says.

Also, the draft resolution proposes to exclude the goal of strengthening leadership in the fish markets of the European Union and the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. This decision was made due to the fact that markets for products in Europe, the United States and Canada are now closed for Russian fisheries enterprises, and the market of the Asia-Pacific region "is changing, and therefore it is difficult to assess its potential." As alternatives consider the market of African and Latin American countries.

In 2021, according to Rosstat, fish consumption decreased by 2%, to 21.7 kg per person per year. The National Rating Agency expected that a sharp rise in prices and difficulties with imports would threaten to reduce the share of salmon in the structure of fish consumption in Russia. The size of the redfish market may already have dwindled since the food embargo in 2014, with buyers switching to cheaper species.
