The Kremlin announced the unwillingness of Volgograd residents to rename the city to Stalingrad

At the presidential level, there is no discussion about renaming Volgograd to Stalingrad, this topic needs to be approached carefully, since, according to polls, city residents do not support such initiatives. This was stated by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.

“There are no discussions in the administration or at the presidential level in this regard,” he said.

Peskov drew attention to the results of the VTsIOM poll of February 1, 2023, which showed that 67% of Volgograd residents rather do not support the renaming of the city to Stalingrad. At the same time, he made a reservation, calling the Volgograd residents “inhabitants of Stalingrad.” The Kremlin spokesman stressed that “it is necessary to weigh all the pros and cons” in this matter.

Last week, on January 26, Sergey Stepashin, chairman of the expert council of the all-Russian organization “Officers of Russia” offered rename Volgograd to Stalingrad in honor of the Battle of Stalingrad.

After that in the Kremlin clarifiedthat there are no discussions on this subject. On January 31, Peskov also said that the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Volgograd in honor of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Battle of Stalingrad was not connected with plans to rename the city to Stalingrad.

Until 1925, the city was called Tsaritsyn, after which it was renamed Stalingrad. After the death of Joseph Stalin in 1961, the city was named Volgograd.
