The social network has insufficiently protected the personal data of European users under the age of 18.
According to information from Politico, the Irish Data Protection Commission has decided to impose a heavy fine on the social network Instagram. The application is sanctioned to the tune of 405 million euros for violation of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) with its minor European users.
“We passed our sanction on Friday“, confirmed the Irish CNIL to Reuters. Details of this decision will be released next week.
Meta challenges the decision
Under the GDPR, the Irish Data Protection Commission is the supervisory authority for tech giants with European headquarters in that country. The latter had opened a survey in 2020 focused on Instagram users aged 13 to 17 and operating a professional account. According to its findings, the social network published the phone numbers and email addresses of these minors.
The Meta group has indicated that it intends to appeal this decision. He points out that he has changed his methods and that he has already implemented new features to protect the personal data of teenagers.
The Irish CNIL has already inflicted in 2021 a fine of 225 million euros against WhatsApp and another in 2022 of 17 million euros against Facebook. At least six other investigations concerning the Meta group are under investigation.
