The head of the European Commission arrived in Kyiv for negotiations on the admission of Ukraine to the EU
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, arrived in Kyiv for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on economic rapprochement and the admission of Ukraine to the European Union, she wrote about this on her Twitter account.
“I am in Kyiv on my third visit since the beginning of the Russian war. <...> I will discuss with the President [Украины Владимиром] Zelensky and Prime Minister [Денисом] Shmygal how to continue to ensure the convergence of our economies and peoples, while Ukraine moves towards EU membership, ”she wrote (cit. according to TASS).
The day before, on September 14, von der Leyen announced her intention to pay a working visit to Ukraine. Also, during the annual speech in the European Parliament, the head of the European Commission promised Ukraine full economic and financial support and assistance in the process of joining the EU. According to her, since the beginning of this year, Kyiv has received 19 billion euros from Brussels in the form of military, economic, financial and humanitarian assistance.
Zelensky submitted an application for Ukraine's accession to the EU on February 28. On March 21, it began to be considered at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels. The head of the European Commission, during a visit to Kyiv in April, gave Zelensky a questionnaire to start negotiations on joining the EU. In early May, the second part of the completed questionnaire was received. The last time the head of the European Commission arrived in Kyiv on a visit in June. Then she discussed Ukraine's application for EU membership. Later, the European Commission recommended giving the country the status of an EU candidate.
