The European Union plans to adopt the tenth package of sanctions against Russia by February 24, the anniversary of the start of the special operation in Ukraine. This was stated by the head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, reports AFP on Twitter.

“We will introduce, together with our partners from the G7, a price ceiling for oil products from Russia and by February 24 – a year after the start of the invasion – we intend to introduce the tenth package of sanctions,” she said during her visit to Kyiv.

Earlier today the European Parliament accepted a resolution calling on the EU countries to adopt the tenth package of sanctions against Russia “as soon as possible”. In addition, the European Parliament proposed imposing sanctions against Lukoil and Rosatom, as well as abandoning not only Russian oil and gas, but also uranium.

On January 17, Ursula von der Leyen announced the tenth package of sanctions against Russia. She noted that the restrictions will be aimed at correcting the shortcomings made in the development of previous packages.

Bloomberg citing sources wrotethat sanctions can be adopted by the anniversary of the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine. According to the publication, the EU may expand restrictions against the sector of drones and dual-use goods used by the Russian military-industrial complex. Before Reuters wrotethat Poland and Lithuania want to achieve sanctions against the Russian nuclear sector, including against Rosatom.

At the same time, the expansion of sanctions was not supported in Hungary. Prime Minister Viktor Orban declaredthat Hungary will veto initiatives affecting Russian nuclear power organizations and enterprises.

Against the backdrop of the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, the EU has already adopted nine packages of sanctions against the Russian Federation. According to the head of the EC, the purpose of the sanctions is “plunge the Russian economy into recession for decades.”

At the same time, the Russian authorities have repeatedly said that the West failed to achieve its goal. Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasizedthat the EU’s calculations to “crush” the Russian economy did not materialize. He pointed outthat nothing happened to Russia that “the enemy predicted” for her. Putin pointed to the composure of the citizens of the Russian Federation and their readiness for challenges.
