The head of Catalonia announced plans to hold a new independence referendum

In Catalonia, a referendum on self-determination of the region may be held among local residents. This was told by the head of the government of the region Pere Aragones.

According to him, he wants to offer the Spanish government an agreement to agree on a plebiscite. Aragones added that he wants to propose a “clear agreement” to the state, which would establish when and how Catalonia can again exercise its right to determine its own future.

“And I want to do it with the maximum support of the Catalan society,” Aragones said.

Earlier it was reported that the fugitive leader of the movement for the secession of Catalonia from Spain, Carles Puigdemont, was detained in Sardinia. He was detained under an international arrest warrant issued by Madrid in October 2019.

Puigdemont, who fled abroad from Spain, was elected a member of the European Parliament in 2019. He received immunity from prosecution. However, in March 2022, European parliamentarians decided to remove immunity from him and two of his associates.

Puigdemont and his colleague, despite being elected to the European Parliament, were unable to take up their duties, since this is prevented by Spanish legislation – it requires an oath on the constitution in order for the deputy mandate to take effect. And for this, politicians must return to Spain, where they are threatened with arrest.

In 2017, the Catalan authorities already held a referendum on the independence of the region from Spain. They then proclaimed the independence of the country. However, the central authorities declared the referendum illegal, especially since almost only supporters of independence took part in it – the rest of the inhabitants of Catalonia, in favor of preserving the unity of Spain, boycotted it.
