Russian oil supplies pose a threat to the environmental safety of the Baltic Sea, as old tankers are used for export. This is stated in the information bulletin, which was issued by the Finnish Border Guard.

According to the agency, until February 2022, Russian exporters used modern vessels, but now tankers are being attracted, which were planned to be cut into scrap metal a few years ago.

In Helsinki, they believe that the main danger is the general condition of the ship’s structures and equipment, which are constantly deteriorating. At the same time, Finnish border guards do not rule out that the traffic of Russian raw materials supplies may change.

For example, large ice-class vessels will pump oil from the shore and then transfer it to smaller tankers in the southern part of the Baltic Sea.

The European Union imposed an embargo on supplies of Russian, delivered by sea, from December 5 last year. From February 5, 2023, a ban on the supply of Russian oil products will come into force.
