The Federation Council unanimously approved the entry of new territories into Russia

The Federation Council (SF) ratified the treaties on joining Russia with the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), as well as the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. The decision was taken unanimously. The meeting was attended by 153 senators out of 200. The procedure for admission to the new territories will end with amendments to the Russian Constitution.

“Our new compatriots become Russian citizens forever and can be sure that Russia will protect, support, support them under any conditions. This is the sacred duty of our country,” said Federation Council speaker Valentina Matvienko.

The day before, October 3, the State Duma also ratified treaties on the entry into Russia of new territories, as well as approved relevant laws. To the Federation Council will enter eight senators from the new territories.

The DPR and LPR within Russia will retain the status of republics and their former names, Russian will be the official language. Kherson and Zaporozhye regions will remain regions. In the Kremlin spokethat the DPR and LPR will enter within the borders of 2014, and the borders of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions will be determined after Russia “consults with the population.” The heads of the new regions will receive the status of governors. Within ten days, the President of the Russian Federation must appoint acting heads of subjects.

Residents of new regions are recognized as Russian citizens from the day they are admitted to Russia (September 30th).
