The Federation Council proposed to limit the import of drugs for animals from unfriendly countries

The Federation Council, following the results of parliamentary hearings of the committee on agrarian and food policy, proposed limiting the import of veterinary drugs from unfriendly countries and introducing increased duties in the amount of 35% of the customs value on a number of animal medicines, writes "News". According to the Ministry of Agriculture, 60% of domestically produced veterinary drugs are now on the market.

Currently, the government decree setting a 35% duty on goods from "unfriendly states" specifies shampoos, deodorants and various types of weapons. The Federation Council considers it necessary to supplement the list with veterinary preparations. The Russian authorities consider the United States, Great Britain, Canada and the EU member states to be "unfriendly countries".

According to Lyudmila Talabayeva, a member of the Federation Council committee on agrarian and food policy and environmental management, first of all, it is necessary to reduce Russia's dependence on imports of veterinary drugs from the European market. “We are not saying that everything should be banned. But there are drugs that have analogues in Russia or they can be purchased on alternative markets. Today it has become obvious that we must increase our production, as well as cooperate with those countries that are also interested in this,” she explained.

As the Ministry of Agriculture clarified to the publication, at the moment there are more than 2.2 thousand medicines for animals on the Russian market, 1.3 thousand of them are of domestic production. The ministry also noted that veterinary drugs produced in “friendly countries” are widely represented in Russia. For the treatment of "economically significant diseases" of animals in Russia, only domestic immunobiological veterinary preparations are used, the Ministry of Agriculture emphasized.

According to the Rosselkhoznadzor, there is no shortage of veterinary drugs on the market now. Foreign companies in the period from January to May 2023 have already imported 70% of the volume supplied for the entire 2022. The department noted that domestic producers are also increasing production capacity.

At the end of March, manufacturers of veterinary drugs proposed at the state level to create a list of vital drugs for animals. The bill, prepared by the Association of Veterinary Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, assumes that a list of the most necessary drugs will appear in Russia, which will be formed by a special commission from representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rosselkhoznadzor, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, as well as customs and antimonopoly services.
