The expert assessed the likelihood of a change in policy towards Ukraine: the West was taken by surprise

The transfer of the special operation to a new format was a surprise

The appeal of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his decision on partial mobilization, as expected, caused a flurry of indignation in the West. The referendums on joining the Russian Federation announced a day earlier in the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions also did not add joy to the European and American friends of the Kyiv regime. How much will the policy of the Western countries in relation to Ukraine change now and are they ready to continue pumping weapons into Nezalezhnaya?

The seriousness of Russia's intentions and the qualitative change in the situation in the area of the special military operation could not but evoke a reaction from the Western powers. But external solidarity in Ukraine remains low, and it would seem that the overall assessment by the West of Kyiv’s “successes” on the battlefield looks strange if you listen to what Ukrainian leaders are broadcasting today.

Zelensky is trying to portray calmness, they say, he already knew everything, and he did not learn anything new. The Ukrainian head even managed to link the announcement of partial mobilization in the Russian Federation with the allegedly existing problem of military personnel. According to Zelensky’s logic, Kyiv, with a mobilization reserve of less than one million people, has no problems with personnel, while Russia, with a reserve of almost 25 million, of which only about 1% is involved in the SVO, has.

It is obvious that the Ukrainian leadership is once again, to put it mildly, cunning, hoping that strong friends from Brussels and Washington will help the unfortunate weak comrade.

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, who also claims that Kyiv is confidently moving towards victory, nevertheless could not resist and, against the backdrop of current events, once again demanded an increase in the supply of Western weapons.

Brussels, as it turned out, is not only not against continuing to help Kyiv, but is also ready to do it with greater intensity. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that Warsaw would do everything possible for NATO to support Ukraine even more. And here again there is a contradiction - why increase the assistance to the already allegedly victorious Ukraine?

Speaking from the podium of the General Assembly, US President Joe Biden, as if echoing his younger colleagues and at the same time drawing a line in the general position of the West, expressed the invariability of maintaining support for Ukraine, but will not all these words of Western leaders about helping Kyiv become a shaking of the air, more and more moving away from reality?

About whether it is now worth waiting for changes in the West's policy towards Ukraine, MK talked with Alexei Zudin, senior lecturer at MGIMO, Russian Foreign Ministry.

- How will the approach of the West to Kyiv change?

- In the near future, the West will not change its policy in Ukraine. Whether he continues to support Ukraine or is forced to stop doing so is now becoming even more dependent on the military actions of Russia and its allies.

- Will the supply of weapons to Kyiv increase?

- Kyiv's statements about the supply of weapons were quite expected, since even before any turn in the situation in Ukraine after February 24 was used by the Kyiv leadership as a reason to demand more weapons. Another thing is that now the West is in an awkward position. Just recently, the Americans made a statement that Kyiv received a sufficient amount of weapons. Germany is starting to waver significantly, stating that deliveries won't start until 2025 at the earliest. The transition of the SVO to a new format took the West by surprise in general, and in the supply of weapons in particular. Most likely, they will have to reconsider their position on this issue. Either immediately go towards Kyiv, or after it becomes clear that the transition of the NWO to a new level is beginning to give a positive result for Russia.
