Peter Stano: the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus is not a step towards de-escalation

Representative of the EU Foreign Service Peter Stano said that the agreement signed today on the deployment of non-strategic nuclear weapons in Belarus “does not contribute to de-escalation”, but refrained from his usual extravagant statements.

“This is not a step towards de-escalation, this is not a step towards reducing tensions, this is a step that increases tensions. It can be viewed in the context of Russian aggression and its support from Belarus. We will closely monitor the development of the situation and respond,” said colleague Josep Borrell.

Earlier today it was reported that upon completion of the signing of the documents, the Minister of Defense of Belarus Viktor Khrenin, in particular, said that the deployment of nuclear weapons in the country “will make them (Western countries – ed.) leadership think about the inadmissibility of further escalation of the situation in the region.”
