The head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, announced that the European Union is no longer dependent on Russian fossil fuels.

During a press conference, she said that back in the spring of 2022, the REPowerEU plan was created to rid the EU of dependence on Russian energy. At the same time, according to her, it was initially assumed that the EU could achieve this goal by 2027.

“Now we have completely got rid of our dependence on Russian fossil fuels. It went much faster than we expected,” said von der Leyen.

On Monday, February 5, the EU embargo on the supply of Russian oil products should come into force.

On December 5 last year, the EU imposed a ban on the import of Russian oil delivered by sea. Since August 2022, the EU has refused to purchase coal from Russia.
