The criminals who beat the dean of the history department of Moscow State University Karpov escaped punishment

The prosecutor's office has already appealed the decision of the court

An attempt to punish the perpetrators of a high-profile attack on the dean of the Faculty of History of Moscow State University, Sergei Karpov, failed. Recall that the scientist was severely beaten in 2002 at the entrance of his house in the southwestern district of the capital. The attackers were released right in the courtroom.

As MK once reported, on March 19, 2002, the scientist was brought home by a company car, he managed to ring the intercom, but did not go up to the apartment. They found him all bloodied in the entrance. Instead of a face - a bloody mess. The sadists kicked in the face - they were afraid that the man would remember them and be able to identify them in the future.

Before losing consciousness, the scientist managed to say that there were several attackers.

Initially, detectives believed the attack was part of a string of crimes against prominent Russian scientists. So, on January 4, 2002, academician Igor Glebov was attacked in St. Petersburg, the scientist died. A month later, the director of the Institute of Psychology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Andrey Brushlinsky, and the head of the Department of Microbiology of the Russian State Medical University, Valery Korshunov, were killed in Moscow.

As a result, it turned out that Karpov became a victim of fanatics - loners. In 2021, law enforcement officers detained two Muscovite brothers who were charged with assaulting the dean. The unemployed decided to rob one of the passers-by of mature age, judging that they had money and some valuables that they could then sell. Together with another accomplice (he has not been identified), the brothers agreed to hunt down a potential victim and kill him.

They arrived at the entrance to a residential building in Yasenevo at about nine o'clock in the evening by car. The dean's leather briefcase, purse and mobile phone, as well as food items that he carried home, became the prey.

During the court session, the defendants filed a motion to dismiss the criminal case due to the expiration of the statute of limitations for criminal liability (more than 15 years have passed since the crime).

The public prosecutors of the Moscow prosecutor's office objected, but the court decided to grant the motions.

The accused were released on August 29 this year in the hall of the Cheryomushkinsky District Court.

Not so long ago, the decision was appealed on appeal to the Moscow City Court. The public prosecutors of the Moscow prosecutor's office considered that the court should still consider the case and pass a verdict.
