The Chinese compared the position of the West on COVID-19 and Ukraine

“Whatever Beijing does is wrong from the point of view of their media”

While the Western media made the protests that erupted in China due to dissatisfaction with severe coronavirus restrictions the main world news, Beijing launched an informational counterattack. The Chinese media accuse the West of covering China's strategy to counter COVID in the same way that Washington fanned the flames of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

Whatever China is doing in its fight against COVID-19 is wrong from the point of view of the Western media, writes the Beijing-based Global Times.

Those who once denounced China's strict approach to epidemic prevention and control are now lauding the consequences of openness. Headlines such as "The catastrophic consequences of China's zero-COVID cancellation" flooded Western social media platforms. Bloomberg is more dramatic, saying "a full reopening could put 5.8 million people in intensive care units" in China and that it would be "impossible to deal with an uncontrolled wave of infections."

It is hard to believe that Bloomberg with a straight face published such a forecast, comments the Global Times. China's 20 measures, recently refined and adjusted to streamline the response to the epidemic, do not mean a weakening of the prevention and control of the virus. They aim to make the response to the virus more targeted and evidence-based, to maximize the safety and health of people, and to minimize the impact of the epidemic on economic and social development.

However, the Global Times continues, “Some Western powers tend to discount all of China’s efforts and achievements in curbing the coronavirus while scrutinizing flaws to provoke confrontation and sow chaos on Chinese soil. It would be better for them if China's development slowed down or stopped."

Due to ideological differences in Western countries and the media, it has become almost an instinct to criticize communist governments in order to undermine them with color revolutions, Shen Yi, a professor at Fudan University, told the Global Times. Professor Shen added that in the big power game, the objective facts of disagreement between China and the West when it comes to fighting the virus has left the West in a state of unease. Thus, they seek to capture, exaggerate and point the finger at all the negative points they can find in China's epidemic control procedures.

This is similar to how Washington is fanning the flames of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the Chinese edition notes. Observers note that some forces in the US and other Western countries cannot accept the fact that China is able to more flexibly adjust its policies and contain the spread of the virus.

Let the data speak for itself, suggests the Global Times. At press time, the total death toll from COVID-19 in China is just over 5,200. But in the United States, the virus has killed 1.09 million people. British scientist John Ross recently made a comparison. He noted that the population of China is 4.3 times the population of the United States. To see what impact US policy on COVID-19 will have on China, you need to multiply the US statistics by 4.3. This means that if China had the same death rate as the US, 4.7 million Chinese would be dead, Ross claims.

In other words, it was the Chinese policy that saved many people, as well as their families, the Global Times concludes.

Every step in China's epidemic prevention and control path is researched by China itself. And the Chinese have seen that China's approach has protected the people well over the past two years. This is enough for the Chinese to look indifferently at the arrogant statements of the West. The nature of the Western media is a political tool, and this has long been exposed. The purpose of their condemnation of China is to set stumbling blocks in the country's development path.

The Chinese response to COVID-19 is never static, but is constantly being adjusted for the better as the situation changes. At the same time, China's priority is how to manage its own affairs well, and not how others judge it. Any Chinese policy to fight the virus is based on three criteria: science, China's interests and the security of the Chinese people, the Global Times concludes.
