Thailand proposes to feed NASA astronauts with beetle larvae

A team of Asian researchers taking part in NASA’s competition to develop food for long-range missions has announced they are ready to feed astronauts edible “sago worms,” according to the Bangkok Post.
These are extremely protein and fat-rich larvae of the red palm weevil. It is also, as the publication explains, a pest for plantations of bananas, palm trees and sugar cane. “Sago worms” are eaten in southern Thailand and neighboring countries.
Red weevil larvae are easy to breed and grow in confined spaces of limited volume, which are spaceships. Moreover, the cycle of reproduction of larvae launched once does not require “replenishment” from the Earth for three years.
Because of these qualities, the larvae are considered by scientists in Thailand to be the ideal food for humans in space.
