The Federal Council of Switzerland at a meeting held on September 16 suspended the visa facilitation agreement with Russia. About it reported on the council website.

Thus, Switzerland adopts a similar visa regime as the entire European Union. “It is in Switzerland’s interest to maintain a common and harmonized European visa policy. Otherwise, evasive movements could lead to a significant increase in visa applications from Russian citizens to Swiss representations.

An agreement on a simplified procedure for issuing visas for Russians between the countries was signed in 2009.

The foreign policy of Switzerland, in accordance with the constitution of this country, is built taking into account the international legal status of permanent neutrality. The country is not included in any of the military alliances, nor in the European Union. At the same time, Switzerland violated political neutrality by joining the EU sanctions against Russia. At the beginning of the special operation in Ukraine, Switzerland closed for Russian airspace and introduced sanctions against three Russian banks and most of the State Duma deputies, later she supported all the packages of sanctions proposed by the European Union.
