Sweden disappointed by US reluctance to put pressure on Turkey

Sweden is deeply disappointed by the US's reluctance to put stronger pressure on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to include the Scandinavian country in NATO ahead of the alliance's summit in Vilnius. It is reported by the Financial Times.

According to the publication, other members of the alliance are trying to convince the Turkish leader to support Sweden's membership in the alliance, insisting that it is "vital" to ensure security in the northern region and the Baltic.

Sweden and Finland simultaneously applied to join NATO last year. In early April 2023, Finland officially became a member of the alliance, while Turkey and Hungary block Sweden's entry into the bloc.

Earlier and. O. US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Derek Hogan said that Washington plans to convince Erdogan to give the green light to Stockholm to join the alliance.
