South Korea protests to Russia and China over joint air patrols
The Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Korea expressed a strong protest to the embassies of the Russian Federation and China in connection with the joint overflight of aircraft of the two states on Tuesday in the air defense identification zone without notifying Seoul.
A senior ministry official, Lee Seung-bum, called the military attachés of Russia and China separately, protesting the above issue, urging them to prevent the recurrence of such situations. “Military aircraft … flew in a sensitive region near the airspace of the Republic of Korea,” the South Korean agency said in a statement.
At the same time, the Committee of Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Korea indicated that there was no violation of the airspace.
The Ministry of Defense of the People’s Republic of China, in turn, reported that the Russian Aerospace Forces and the Air Force of the People’s Liberation Army of China carried out joint air patrols over the waters of the Japan and East China Seas. In response, the Republic of Korea raised its aircraft.
Moscow has previously pointed out that the air defense identification zone was established unilaterally by South Korea and does not create legal obligations for other states. Seoul recognizes that the Air Defense Identification Zone is not airspace, but it does require that aircraft from other countries inform themselves before entering it.
