Snowden said he did not originally plan to stay in Russia
Former NSA officer Edward Snowden, in an interview with Glen Greenwald on the Rumble platform, said that he did not initially plan to stay in Russia, but he had no other choice.
He explained that he should not have stayed in Russia, then he considered the country as an intermediate point on the way to Latin America.
During his 40-day stay in the transit zone of Sheremetyevo Airport, he, according to him, applied to many states for asylum, but some of them were afraid of a reaction from the United States, others were not sure that they could ensure his safety.
“There were no options left, I requested asylum in Russia. I received it,” Snowden said.
An ex-NSA employee ended up in Russia in 2013 after reporting on the Internet surveillance programs of the US intelligence agencies. Snowden flew to Russia from Hong Kong.
Subsequently, the Russian authorities granted him temporary asylum, then a residence permit. In 2022, Snowden received Russian citizenship.
