Silver medals are returned to schools: what benefits are expected

Once upon a time, such an award was cast from pure silver.

At the end of the academic year, the Ministry of Education delighted schoolchildren with the news about the return of the silver medal. It is given to those graduates who have one or two fours in their certificates. Like the gold medal, the silver medal qualifies for benefits only at the local level.

In addition, in order to get a medal, except for fives in all subjects, you must pass the Unified State Examination in compulsory subjects with at least 70 points (and in basic mathematics "5"). This applies to gold - such details have not yet been reported about silver. Therefore, in the era of the Unified State Examination, the highest caste is still the winners and finalists of the Olympiads, especially the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren (they enter any university according to a separate quota). And a hundred points on the exam. And medals are so, a sign of distinction. Although there are nuances.

In some regions, for a gold medal, additional points are still assigned when entering local universities - from 20 to 10 points. Perhaps, they will also give 5-10 points for silver. Also at the regional and federal levels, gold medalists receive an increased scholarship and have the right to preferential admission to the civil service. Somewhere else, in the northern regions of the Russian Federation, especially, they give money for school gold and silver. The nominal value of the award ranges from 400 thousand rubles to a million.

It is curious that Moscow and St. Petersburg also have their own municipal medal "For special achievements in teaching." It is given out to both round honors students with good USE scores, and hundred-point students and Olympiads. This gold medal is named after the medal established by Catherine II in 1828. True, unlike Catherine's, on the modern Moscow of gold, only a few microns are deposited. But for it you can get a lump sum in Moscow.

Silver medals in schools were canceled in 2014. Now they have returned - it will again be awarded as a badge of distinction to graduates of grades 9-11 from September 1. It is possible that in the regions, in addition to additional points and rewards, a silver badge of distinction will bring with it benefits for paying for transport and utilities, hostels - this is practiced with "gold".

In general, what they will give for silver in schools is still unclear. But, obviously, there will be bonuses, not for nothing that the Minister of Education said that the return of this medal to schools is “good news for both parents and schoolchildren.”

“Of course, it was a completely different matter before with medalists,” recalls historian Vadim Alekseev. - Although the silver medalists were then called "unlucky honors students." Perhaps out of envy. Indeed, in the USSR, the owners of the gold and silver medals went without competition to almost any university. Received a government scholarship. And they also had a deferment from the army until graduation from the university.

Gold and silver medals were introduced in schools in 1945. But if everything was fine with gold until perestroika times, silver was less lucky: the medal was either canceled (they stopped awarding it in 1968), then it was returned (it was awarded again in 1985-1992).

Until 1945, medals were made of 583 gold and 925 silver. Then the sample was gradually reduced. Already in the sixties, bronze and cupronickel coated with precious metals were used. Therefore, of course, the gold medals of the 1952-54 model are the most valuable, they are made of pure gold. And, perhaps, school medals of the 1960s made of silver can be considered a numismatic rarity. Then the design of the medals was changed, they increased in size and the inscription “For excellent success in learning, work and exemplary behavior” appeared.

In 1968, silver medals were abolished, which means that relatively few of them were minted. But I say “relatively”, because there are still hundreds of them on the market, and such a medal costs no more than 5,000 rubles. A silver medal of the 1985 model, when they were again canceled at school, costs about 1,500 rubles.
