On Saturday, Russia’s largest basketball Youth Training Center (ITC) opened in Krasnodar. The complex, which will operate on the basis of the VTB United League club Lokomotiv-Kuban, consists of three indoor and one outdoor playgrounds. The facility will train new talented players for the Lokomotiv-Kuban system, a long time ago, even before Russian sports faced international restrictions, relying on Russian basketball players.

The memorandum on the construction of a youth basketball training center in Krasnodar was, as President of the Russian Basketball Federation Andrey Kirilenko recalled, signed back in 2016. During this time, a lot has happened in the world, starting with the coronavirus pandemic and ending with the aggravation of the international situation, but this, as Mr. Kirilenko said, “incredibly large-scale” project was nevertheless implemented. Today, the opening ceremony of the complex took place, which, if we talk specifically about youth sports, has no equal in Russian basketball. The complex, the construction of which was successfully implemented with the help of Russian Railways and the administration of the Krasnodar Territory, consists from three covered areas (central – with stands for 500 seats), as well as street — with a professional 3 x 3 basketball surface. In addition, the complex houses a hotel with 45 rooms, a gym, a canteen and a cafe.

“The opening of this project is an important date in the history of Russian basketball. The upbringing of young talented players is not only a sports, but also a social mission of our club,” said the president of Lokomotiv-Kuban, in whose system the training complex will function, Andrey Vedischev. He also reminded that there are nine pupils of the club in the current composition of the Krasnodar team. And here it should be noted that just a few years ago Krasnodar became much less likely, when compared with other top Russian teams, to invite foreign players, more often relying on Russian players. “Many of our pupils are already involved in the matches of the national team. I have no doubt that the opening of the ITC will attract additional interest to our favorite sport.

Hundreds of promising guys will have the opportunity to improve their skills in ideal conditions: with high-quality medical care, proper sports nutrition, at a facility equipped with the most modern equipment,” Mr. Vedischev is sure.

We add that the new building was tested in combat mode immediately after the opening. The point is that a youth tournament has started at the ITC, in which, in addition to Lokomotiv-Kuban, Tofash (Turkey), Zenit (St. Petersburg), CSKA (Moscow) take part. The competition will end on Monday.
