Russians keep over $640 million in Georgian banks

As of August 2022, the deposits of Russians placed in Georgian commercial banks amount to 1.88 billion lari (about $643 million, or 40 billion rubles). This is reported by the Georgian non-governmental organization “Institute for the Development of Freedom of Information” (IDFA) with reference to the National Bank of Georgia. After the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, by the end of August, 45,439 Russian citizens had opened accounts in Georgian banks.

It follows from the report that as of August this year, the amount of funds placed by Russian citizens in Georgian commercial banks increased by about 170%, and the number of Russians with active accounts in Georgian banks exceeded 60,000 people.

According to IDFI, the turnover of the Russian ruble in Georgia tripled compared to the same period in 2021 – in the second quarter of 2022, exchange offices bought 949.8 million rubles. and sold 929.4 million rubles.

After the start of the military operation in Ukraine, the number of Russian citizens who entered Georgia increased sharply. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, from February 24 to August 1, 49,505 citizens of the Russian Federation, having arrived in the Transcaucasian republic, remained there, that is, they did not cross its border, either heading back to Russia or in the direction of third countries.

After the announcement in Russia of partial mobilization at the border checkpoint “Upper Lars-Kazbegi”, a multi-kilometer queue of Russians who wanted to get into Georgia lined up.
