Russia will create a constellation of Internet satellites with coverage of friendly countries
Russia intends to create a constellation of satellites that will provide fast Internet not only on its territory, but also in friendly countries, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said. According to him, by the end of 2027 it is planned to launch almost 300 devices.
He announced the project at a plenary meeting of the Eurasian Economic Forum. Mr. Mishustin recalled that the Russian authorities approved the national project “Data Economy and Digital Transformation of the State.” It involves solving several problems, including providing high-speed Internet access throughout the country.
“For this we need our own low-orbit space constellation. We plan to create a grouping that will satisfy the needs for fast Internet not only of our country, but also of friendly states,” said Mikhail Mishustin (quoted by TASS).
As the prime minister clarified, test launches of the devices took place in 2023 and in May of this year. In particular, a system of laser communication and data transmission between satellites was tested - at a speed of up to 10 Gbit/sec at a distance of 1 thousand km, Mr. Mishustin informed.
Premier spokethat Roscosmos needs to establish conveyor production of satellites up to 250 units per year. RBC reported that the development of a Russian analogue of Starlink will cost 445 billion rubles. The investments are planned for the next six years. By the end of the term, Bureau 1440 plans to put almost 300 satellites into operation. In total, the developers will have to create 383 devices, as well as conduct 24 missile launches.
